COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
ROLLER FRAME, PAINT
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Federal Specification H-R-550.
This description covers paint roller frames of the slip-off design.
Type I - Professional
Class A - To accommodate 9-inch roller covers
Type II - Consumer
Class A - To accommodate 9-inch roller covers
Class B - To accommodate 7-inch roller covers
Salient characteristics:
The type I frame shall be fabricated of 5/16-inch + 0.0025-inch diameter corrosion resistant steel wire, so formed as to permit mounting the roller cage at 90o + 5o to the handle, and having the center of the roller cage within 1/2-inch + 1/32-inch of the center line of the handle. The type II frame shall be constructed to the same requirements as the type I, except that the wire shall be 1/4-inch + 0.0025-inch diameter.
The cage shall be free turning on the wire which is at 90o to the handle, and so constructed of O.135-inch diameter spanning wires, as to accommodate covers having a nominal inside core diameter of 1-1/2 inches. The spanning wires shall be made of corrosion resistant metal or metal made corrosion resistant by plating. The type I cage shall have a minimum of five spanning wires and the type H shall have a minimum of four spanning wires. A force of not less than six pounds shall be required to remove the cover from the cage.
The handle shall be made of a molded low density polyethylene or polypropylene plastic. It shall be a minimum of 5-1/8 inch in length from the point of insertion to the outer end. The grip shall be pressure bonded to the frame so as to allow no movement, lateral or rotational, between it and the wire. The outer end shall contain a threaded hole for securely attaching an extension pole with 3/4-inch 5 pitch acme thread. The grip end nearer the cage shall be molded so as to allow hooking the roller frame over the rim of a paint pail or roller tray. The type I grip shall have a minimum weight of 1.5 ounces and the type II shall have a minimum weight of 0.8 ounces.
The roller frame shall not discolor, wrinkle, blister or otherwise deteriorate when submerged for one hour in a solvent mixture, by volume, of:

Regulatory requirements. The offeror/contractor is encouraged to use recovered materials in accordance with Public Law 94-580 to the maximum extent practicable.
Preservation, packaging, packing, labeling, and marking. Preservation, packaging, packing, labeling, and marking shall be as specified in the contract or order.
