COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
COVER, PAINT ROLLER
The General Services Administration has authorized the
use of this commercial item description, for all federal agencies.
1. Scope. This commercial item description covers paint roller covers. The size (or length) of the paint roller cover shall be as specified in the contract or order.
2. Salient characteristics:
2.1 Type 1. Animal Fibers and Animal/Synthetic Fiber Type.
Class A – Sheepskin (for use with oil base paints on rough surfaces.)
Class B – Woven mohair/viscose blend (for use with oil base paints on smooth surfaces.)
2.2 Type 2. Synthetic
Class A – Knitted polyester (for use with latex and oil base paints.)
Class B – Woven acrylic/modacrylic blend (for use with latex paints.)
Class C – Woven polyester (for use with latex paints.)
2.3. Covers shall consist of a pile on a backing as specified for the applicable type and class. When immersed in mineral spirits (type 1 and 2) or water (type 2) for one hour, the backing material, cement or core shall not show evidence of solubility to such an extent that the ends of the covers separate more than 1.6 mm (1/16 inch). The cover shall not slip off the cape with an end-wise pull of less than 27 N (6 pounds). For pile heights 3.2 mm (1/8 inch) up to and including 22 mm (7/8 inch), the pile shall be beveled 45O. For pile heights 25.4 mm (1-inch) and greater, the bevel shall be not less than 30O nor more than 45O from the end plane to the core. The sheepskin or fabric cover shall be attached to the core by adhesive bonding which shall include end gluing. Staples used in the manufacturing process, for fastening the sheepskin or fabric to the core, shall be removed. The assembled roller cover shall have a minimum bonding strength of 33 N (7.5 pounds) per linear inch (except that Type 1, Class A shall be 22 N [5 pounds] per linear inch minimum.) All roller covers shall be of the sewed-stocking type.
2.4 Type 1, Class A covers shall be of tanned sheepskin with pile heights of 16 mm (5/8 inch), 25.4 mm (1-inch), or 32 mm (1-14 inch) +/- 4.8 mm (3/16 inch). The sheepskin shall be of a uniform color without bare spots, cuts, holes or hard spots.
2.5 Type 1, Class B covers shall be made of a woven pile fabric with the pile being a blend of mohair and viscose fibers. The pile yarn shall be woven with a “W” bind weave 212 tufts per square inch +/- 5%. The backing fabric shall be woven with 55 ends (warp) and 46 picks (filling) per inch +/- 5%. The backing fabric shall be coated with a heat-cured synthetic coating. Pile thickness, backing yarn size, pile yarn content and weight of fabric shall be as specified in Table 1.
